25 Christmas Favorites

25 Christmas Favorites

Ok, we’ve had the turkey, watched hours of football and (maybe) plunked a little antacid, and are getting geared up for the weekend.  We’ll open the closets and attic hatches, take deep mindful breaths and get started on decking our halls . . . well, you know the drill.

In our family (and I mean the ENTIRE family), we make a priority of bringing out the Christmas movies along with the decorations.  These are just a sample of my personal holiday themed favorites, listed in alphabetical order, so that I didn’t have to single out an all-time favorite.  I’m sure you will agree and groan at the same time while reading this list, but then again, that’s why it’s mine - Ho Ho Ho!

Seriously though, I encourage you to take the time to see these films, as most of these are merely set at Christmas, but have broader, over-arching themes. Besides, they’re fun!

1. Auntie Mame

Auntie Mame Movie Poster

True, we could (and do) watch Rosalind Russell anytime of the year, but I love the Christmas Scene, and that for her, generosity was like breathing - something that made both Mame and Patrick truly richer than their holdings in the Knickerbocker Bank.

2. Bells of St. Mary's

Bells of St. Mary's Movie Poster

I love this film now that I’ve finally seen this Bing Crosby & Ingrid Bergman classic in its entirety. You have to see this on a DVD or on AMC; otherwise, you’ll find the Patsy character has gone missing in action to accommodate the commercials.

3. The Bishop's Wife

The Bishops Wife Movie Poster

This is hands down my favorite Christmas movie!  I never tire of watching Cary Grant wave his hand to decorate a tree, or David Niven getting stuck to that chair!  I can’t believe their roles were reversed at the last minute. It would’ve been a completely different film!  Remake Watch:  There is also a very good contemporary remake “The Preacher’s Wife” with Denzel Washington and Courtney B.Vance (yeah, Whitney’s in it too).

4. Christmas in Connecticut

Christmas in Connecticut Movie Poster

In this screwball comedy meets Christmas card, Barbara Stanwyck plays a single, New York columnist posing as a “pre-Martha” domestic goddess. She gets roped by her magazine into entertaining a Vet for Christmas, and the hjinks ensue  Remake Watch: There is one; it has Arnold Schwarzenegger in it . . enough said.

5. A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story Movie Poster

The Ralphie character in this boyhood holiday yarn is as universally loved as Scrooge or George Bailey, and the phrase “you’ll shoot your eye out!” has  become part of my generation’s holiday lexicon.

6. Die Hard

Die Hard Movie Poster

Corporate greed, marital strife, bad guys, Alan Rickman playing mega bad guy, Bruce Willis playing John the good guy, action, gunfire, terrorism, clever writing, quick jokes . . . when I say Christmas movie, this is what my guy usually reaches for!

7. Elf

 Elf Movie Poster

Will Ferrell stars as a human raised in the world of Christmas elves.  He embarks on a hilarious journey to find and then bond with his father, played by James Caan. Ferrell is surprisingly charming as a true innocent trapped in our overly-commercial world.

8. The Family Stone

The Family Stone Movie Poster

I admit, I’ve had a bias against Sarah Jessica Parker, but what she brings to this family’s Christmas table (headed by Diane Keaton & Craig T Nelson) is nothing short of extraordinary. Even the house is a character in this story - I guarantee you’ll love it!

9. Holiday Affair

Holiday Affair Movie Poster

I don’t know why this film isn’t mentioned more often as it is a perfect Christmas love story. Janet Leigh plays a single mom who can’t afford a toy train for her son.  Robert Mitchum helps her out, putting them both in a funny predicament. Truly Charming.

10. Home Alone

Home Alone Movie Poster

It’s safe to say that McCauley Culkin is what carries this movie, and that his portrayal of Kevin, an eight year old who ironically gets exactly what he wished for has become another addition to the family of iconic Christmas heroes.  Don’t bother with the sequels. I am warning you.

11. It's a Wonderful Life

It's a Wonderful Life Movie Poster

Jimmy Stewart’s portrayal of George Bailey has elevated the character to the level of one of Faulkner or Shakespeare in our collective consciousness.  It’s hard to believe that this beloved Frank Capra classic was originally a box office flop!  Remake Watch: They’re all awful.  Accept no substitutions.

12. Lethal Weapon

 Lethal Weapon Movie Poster

Here’s another addition to my Christmas movies for guys list.  My brother and cousins relish adding this buddy film to the pile.  There are the requisite good cops and bad guys, but it is the chemistry between Mel Gibson & Danny Glover that make you smile.

13. Little Women

Little Women Movie Poster

I am of course, referring to the version starring June Allyson as Jo, which had always been played at Christmastime while I was growing up.  The all-star cast includes Mary Astor, Janet Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor to name a few.  Remake Watch: Actually, the original stars Katherine Hepburn, but that version seems flat to me.  Winona Ryder takes the lead in the ‘90s version, but the standout there (in my opinion) is Susan Sarandon as Marmie.  You be the judge.

14. Love, Actually

Love Actually Movie Poster

This one was an instant hit with me. I also think that Hugh Grant’s dancing had nearly every woman I know fall in love with him again. It also features what has to be the most unique Christmas Pageant on record.  Check out the extra scenes on the DVD too.

15. Meet Me in St. Louis

Meet Me In St.Louis Movie Poster

It was my Grandma’s favorite, and she raised us all to make it one of our favorites as well. Judy Garland is probably at her most beautiful in her role as Esther.  The film also launched the perennial hit “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.

16. Miracle on 34th Street

Miracle On 34th Street Movie Poster

Again I am referring to the one true version, starring Maureen O’Hara and Natalie Wood.  They play a modern mother and daughter who have stopped believing in fairy tales, magic and Santa Claus - until the man himself shows up. Remake Watch: There is a ‘90s version with Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle, but it’s more of a send-up of the original, which makes me wonder why it was made at all.

17. Mixed Nuts

 Mixed Nuts Movie Poster

If you end up suffering from the holiday blahs, this film should help you get over it.  The story is set at a 1-800 suicide prevention hotline, but the people who work there are just as messed up (more so) as anyone else. Liev Schreiber in drag is worth it alone.

18. Penny Serenade

Penny Serenade Movie Poster

One of my favorite Cary Grant films, particularly because he’s playing against type.  You see him be the perfect dad - playing with his child, yell at a judge to keep her and beam with pride at her school Christmas play without crying.  Bring Kleenex.

19. The Polar Express Polar Express Movie Poster

I paged through the book years ago, and thought it to have some of the most beautiful illustrations I had ever seen.  To see them faithfully translated to the big screen is wonderful.  3-D IMAX version is spectacular!

20. The Ref

The Ref Movie Poster

If you can’t get through the holidays without Lexipro and a shot of tequila, then this is the film for you. Dennis Leary plays an unfortunate cat burglar who gets stuck with the ultimate dysfunctional family going through the motions of the holidays.

21. The Santa Clause

 The Santa Clause Movie Poster

Tim Allen shines as a dad trying to live up to his obligations both on the ethereal and temporal planes.  The film is a testimony to all who not only continue to believe in Santa Claus, but to those who believe in them.

22. Scrooge

Scrooge Movie Poster

Many have made Alastair Sim’s portrayal of the famed character part of their yearly tradition.  It is especially so here in Chicago, where it was always shown on WTTW every Christmas Eve.    Remake Watch:  There are more film & TV versions of the Dickens story than I can count. There are a lot of people who prefer the Reginald Denny version. My sister once proposed that if you took the Tiny Tim from Reginald’s, and paired him with Sim’s Scrooge, that no one would argue anymore.

23. Scrooged

Scrooged Movie Poster

This modern version stars Bill Murray as Big-Wig producer of a Mega Million TV station, and the ghosts take him on a wild ride through his shallow, pathetic past.  A mildly flawed but underrated film.

24. While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping Movie Poster

You can see that family is a favorite theme with my choices.  Sandra Bullock stars in a story about a woman who goes from having no one in her life to having an instant family for Christmas, all based on a little white lie.

25. White Christmas

 White Christmas Movie Poster

I have been caught making faces at people that admit they haven’t seen this film. If you can’t laugh watching Bing Crosby & Danny Kaye perform “Sisters, Sisters” then you have no soul. Check out the sing-a-long screenings at the Music Box Theater.   So there you are, love ‘em or hate ‘em, every family has their own special choices whose stories speak to them.  As long as you sit down and actually watch them together, that’s what’s important.   · Happy Holidays from everyone here at italkfilm.com!

My Thanksgiving Trio

My Thanksgiving Trio

I have a love-hate relationship with Thanksgiving.  I think most adult children do at some point.   No matter how long you’re away from home, all you have to do is walk in the door and your “role” has been resumed as if your family is some kind of theatre troupe who only has one play in their repertoire.  God forbid there has been a change in your life, good or bad – for it will become the focus of at least part of the discussion.

Fortunately for most of us, there is at least ONE person we look forward to seeing regardless; the one who will pat our hand to keep us calm, or even divert attention away from you to aid your stomach and psyche.

Then again, sometimes that person is also having a bad year and can throw you under the bus.  This is why I make it a point to have these films on while I’m still at my home making my assigned side dish.  They are all comedies and have never let me down.

I give you . . .

Carla Gugino plays Rebecca, a Nebraskan farm girl transplanted to the free-wheeling dorm life of UCLA.  After a rocky start, she enlists Crawl (Pauly Shore), her R.A. into helping her adjust to California living.  She does all the idiot freshman things: she dies her hair, gets a tattoo and dresses completely different, all in the first 2 months.  Then the dreaded Thanksgiving break arrives.  She drags Crawl back home with her to meet her family, and the hilarity ensues.

I remember this film being out as I was graduating high school, and really identified with the theme of walking the identity tightrope – who you want to be versus who your loved ones think you should be.

Home for the HolidaysHome for the Holidays Movie Poster

Director: Jodie Foster

Written by:  W. D. Richter  based on the short story by Chris Radant.

Claudia (Holly Hunter) has lost her job, made out with her boss, and is coming down with a cold all on the same day – the day before Thanksgiving.  She has also found out that she is making this trip alone, as her daughter Kitt (Claire Danes) has decided to spend the holiday with her boyfriend.  She goes on to meet her parents, played by Anne Bancroft & Charles Durning at her childhood home, and finds herself swimming in a sea of family dramas

This film had some eerie parallels for me.  First, the birth order of the kids is girl, boy girl just like my tribe.  The youngest two fight constantly and everyone has a feeling of fatigue underlying everything they say and do.   Except for mystery friend Joe Fish (Dylan McDermott) that is!

Trust me when I say the Turkey scene alone is worth it.

Planes, Trains & AutomobilesPlanes Trains and Automobiles Poster

Written & Directed by: John Hughes

Workaholic Ad exec Neal (Steve Martin), has to get home for Thanksgiving.  He ends up with an unlikely travel partner named Del (John Candy) a shower ring salesman. They spend two days criss-crossing the country to make it in time, learning about each other along the way.   To tell you any more than that would spoil the adventure.

Most folks remember the infamous pillow scene, but I just see it as another stellar entry in the John Hughes canon of character-driven relationship comedies.

Happy Thanksgiving wherever you are.

Top Ten Movies for Veterans Day

1)Apocalypse Now (1979)

Apocalypse Now Movie Poster

Set in Vietnam , Captain Willard is sent to go find a soldier that has setup his own military camp deep in the jungle . The soldier is Captain Kurtz and he is bit insane . This movie has great photography and brings you into a deep dark place the jungles of Vietnam and the horror of this terrible war. Very dramatic and gruesome, not for anyone with weak stomach. Captain Willard is sent to stop this terror in the jungle at all costs.

2) U-571 (2000)

U-571 Movie Poster

U-571 is set in World War II in the battles over the Atlantic ocean . Between German U-boats and American submarine. There mission is capture a German U-boat and steal its Enigma machine. In hopes of cracking the Enigma code for allied fleets, to help stop the German Navy. I love this film. Every time I see it on cable, I watch it.
Maybe its just submarine movies, but especially this one. You will get caught up with the turmoil and problems the crew faces; just trying to keep the Enigma Machine intact . To guarantee the war for the American and British Navy for safe passage over the ocean seas.

3)Enemy at the Gates (2001)

Enemy at the Gates Movie Poster

Vassili Zaitsev, a Russian farmer has been sent to the front to fight against the German Army in the city of Stalingrad. He is glorified by a war journalist, as a hero for all Russian soldiers and the country to believe in. A German sniper is sent to kill him, and destroy what hopes the Russia has left. Based partially on a true story , Vassili Zaitsev was a Russian Sniper used for propaganda. The rest I am not to sure about , otherwise a great movie none the less.

4)Hamburger Hill (1987)

Hamburget Hill Movie Poster

A Vietnam war film based upon the attack of hill 937, nicknamed Hamburger Hill. The Vietnam war was fought numerous battles over hills constantly that really didnt matter to anyone except officers, in the rear with the gear. Shows how pointless sometimes war can be. War is fought by soldiers giving their all, even for the most pointless of objectives. Great movie , but pretty graphic. Shows how much suffering some soldiers had to go through in the front lines of Vietnam. True story.

5) Zulu (1964)

Zulu Movie Poster

Zulu, a film set in the colonial British era about the Battle of Yorks Drift. Based on a true story of 150 British soldier defending a asmall outpost in the middle of Africa, against 5000 Zulu warriors. Starring Micheal Caine as Lt. Gonville Bromhead, one of two commanders to take on the defense. The most Victoria Crosses given in any battle ever. For anyone that doesn't know it is like getting a Medal of Honor in America. Great movie one of my all time favorites.

6)Glory (1989)

Glory Movie Poster
Starring Mathew Broderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman, all-star cast I would say. Tells the story of the first black regiments brought together to fight during the Civil War fo the north. It shows that even though these men were slaves, they would fight for America with everything they got. No matter what difficulties were put in their way.

7)Blackhawk Down (2001)

Black Hawk Down Movie Poster

Blackhawk Down is set in the early 1990's during the Clinton era. Where special forces troops were sent into war torn Somalia to help rescue soldiers trapped in Mogadishu in a crashed helicopter. Its a battle between U.S. military forces against, a Somali Warlord and rebel army. There is plenty of action in this film, because the highly dangerous urban warfare filmed.

8)Guns of Navarone (1961)

Guns of Navarone Movie Poster

A small group of soldiers is sent to take out the Guns of Navarone. These gigantic guns were making it impossible for the escape of British soldiers, while controlling the waters off of Navorone. This small strike force must succeed, or 2000 troops will be captured with no escape from Axis soldiers.

9)M.A.S.H (1970)

MASH Movie Poster

Not every movie has to big bloody battle. M.A.S.H is a drama/comedy based on group of doctors and personal in the Korean war. Who use any way they can to keep sane in long drawn out war faced with nothing but the carnage of the operating table. After the movie it lead to one of the most popular longest running T.V. shows ever, starring the 4077th medivac hospital.

10)Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)

Letters From Iwo Jima Movie Poster

One of two movies directed by Clint Eastwood, spotlighting a different perspecive of World War II. From the eyes of Japanese soldiers defending the Island of Iwo Jima. This was a very significant battle during World War II, for both sides. The Japanese soldiers are faced against insurmountable odds of American Troops, making a landing by sea; with no reinforcements in sight to come help them. Very interesting point of view, to the see the battle from the other side of the coin.

11)Band of Brothers (2001)

Band of Brothers Movie Poster

For anyone that has loads of time, and do not mind watching a bunch of long episodes. HBO's series Band of Brothers is extremely entertaining and enthralling true story of Easy company of the 101st airborne. From the landing on the coast of France to marching all the way to Hitler's mountain fortress. A great series that everyone should see. I know this is a T.V. series but I just had to mention it . It contains narration of remaining living soldiers of Easy Company and their experiences of the war.

I couldn't mention every War film that I love , but I got it down to Ten, well 11. I am sure there many other movies like, Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, Tora, Tora, Tora or even Pearl Harbor. Besides, I thought they would be too cliche.
