American Violet is a based on a true story about a young black woman Dee Roberts "Nicole Beharie" ,living in the southern state of Texas at the Arlington Springs housing project. She is a single mother of four young children, supporting them all on the modest salary that she makes working as a waitress in town. Without the help of government housing and food stamps she would have a hard time raising her family.

One day in the housing project where she is living at is targeted on a wide scale by local law enforcement. The District attorney "Micheal O'Keefe", is launching a large mass drug bust on the entire project. Dragging people one by one out their houses and arresting them all in short amount of time. They have problems locating Dee, but end up finding her down at work and arresting her while she is still on the clock working. She is quickly brought to the county prison and booked on charges and thrown into a cell. While being locked up she realizes that she is not the only person there from her community . After some time she finally calls her mother with her one phone call, telling her that she has been arrested she thinks for unpaid parking tickets that she has ignored for quite a while. The only thing she can think of that could cause her to be locked up in the first place. She assures her mother that it will not be long and will try to get out as soon as possible.

When she finally makes in front of the judge, she finds out why she was arrested. For selling and distributing drugs, Dee knows that she has nothing to do with drug dealing and thought all along that it was all over parking tickets. She cannot believe that they are even charging her with such a crime. Even though in the raid at the projects lead to no physical evidence, they give her the choice to plead guilty to drug charges as a felon or wait in jail for her trial date to give her a chance to fight her charges.
Risking the chance of losing her apartment, her children and her job as waitress she fights the system to try to stop the corrupt District Attorney from ever doing this again to her or to anyone else in her community.

After seeing this film it brings to light a subject that most people hardly ever talk about. It shows how easily it is for some people to abuse the powers that they have being a part of law enforcement. Now mind you not every police officer, or District Attorney acts like the people depicted in this film but it does exist. It is important for people to see this film to know that the system has a flaw and it needs to be fixed . In the end of the film they display a number of people that actually take a plea bargain before going to trial, that number is 95 percent . Truly amazing to me to find this out, people can just be brought up on charges and bullied into a sentence of jail time along with charges added to their permanent record without ever having a chance to defend themselves in a court of law all based on fear. Even though this film touches on quite a few complex subjects it delivers a message to people that they must know. Making the audience see the skewed view against racial injustice and poverty here in America. A must see for anyone who believes that most racial problems are almost nonexistent in America and there is no longer any problems that need to be fixed.
