Quotes:

One of this countries biggest problems is the illegal alien infusion across it's borders. For some the risks involved in coming to America and being able to stay here is worth the risk that they take. The areas that many of these people come from would surprise the most hardened person. It's not just Mexico anymore. In "Crossing Over" Director Wayne Kramer takes us through the struggles and hardships that many immigrants face on a daily basis. The film deals with the United States and Mexican borders, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures. Max Brogan (Harrison Ford) is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent with a dangerous flaw, he has a heart and feels true sympathy for the very people he must track down and deport. His partner, Iranian-American, Hamid (Cliff Curtis) awaits his father's naturalization ceremony and appears dedicated to doing his job. Gavin Kossef (Jim Sturgess) is a man who sticks to his principles to get a green card, even though what he does is mainly wrong, he feels it's worth the risk, while his girlfriend a beautiful Australian model, Claire Shepard (Alice Eve) is willing to sell her body for it. Cole Frankel (Ray Liotta) and Denise Frankel (Ashley Judd) play a married couple and yet they're on two different teams, one takes advantage of the newcomers while the other tries to save them. But the most controversial is probably the issue of freedom of speech, Taslima Jahangir (Summer Bishil) writes a paper in which she says that she doesn't agree with what the 9/11 hijackers did but it got Americans to wake up and notice them. The paper is turned over to the FBI and they raid her families home, the FBI takes Taslima into her bedroom and tells her that they know her and her parents are in the country illegally and that if she agrees to go in for some more questions, they won't deport her family. Taslima's younger brother Abul (Jamen Nanthakumar) and sister Jahanara (Jaysha Patel) are American citizens though and can't be deported. Though in the case of her mother Rokeya (Naila Azad) and father Munshi (Shelley Malil) they are both in America Illegally. Taslima is taken into custody and Denise Frankel is assigned to handle Taslima's case, she is blunt and upfront with Taslima, she doesn't want anything to be misunderstood. One day when Claire is trying to get some documents taken care of she is pulling out of a parking spot and hits Cole's car, she is upfront with him and tells him that she doesn't have insurance and that she had spent several hours trying to get her papers in order. Cole tells her he can handle that for her but he wants favors from her in return, they barter back and forth on how long and how often they will meet for sex. On a raid of a factory Max apprehends a young woman, Mireya Sanchez (Alice Braga) who tells him that if she doesn't get money to her babysitter that day, the babysitter would put her son out on the streets. Max doesn't want to buy into this story its as if he has heard every one before, but something about this woman's story gets into his soul and he cant let go. Hamid's family are about to become citizens, when his sister Zahra and her boss are murdered, this rocks the family and threatens to disrupt the families big day as well as Hamid's ability to do his job. A young Korean man, Yong Kim (Justin Chon) is being forced into joining a gang, he keeps this from his parents, who are also going to be sworn into legal citizenship as well. One night the gang takes Yong along to rob a grocery store, they think that the store is a front for some money launderers, the night they choose, is the same one Hamid chooses to shop there. During the robbery he has a shoot out with the gang, and Yong takes the store owners wife hostage, Hamid asks him why he is doing this that his options are getting smaller by the second, Yong tells him that he is going to be sworn in as a citizen the next morning, Hamid tells him that is a great thing and decides to let the boy go. Max having found a bracelet belonging to Zahra, in Hamid's jacket thinks that he has killed her, he confronts him during the swearing in ceremony and we sit back and watch how a families customs can turn against them and ruin them. We find out that it wasn't Hamid that killed Zahra, but it was someone close. Claire had tried so many ways of getting citizenship, she even asked Zahra's boss, the one who was murdered to get her a green card, when he was murdered her documents are left as evidence, she is approached by police and spills the story of Cole Frankel, and how he promised to help her get legal status. Cole is then arrested and walked down the hallway, his wife Denise passes them as they are getting in the elevator. Taslima is deported back home along with her mother Roykeya. The Mexican woman Mireya, who was returned to Mexico, tried to sneak back into America to find her son, unknown to her Max has found the boy and is returning him to his grandparents, he arrives after Mireya has left for America. The end of this picture has most of the ensemble drifting apart, families are torn apart by greed and desperation. This movie will touch you in ways that when you walk in you won't expect, the lengths that people will go to in order to find that dreamt freedom is astronomical. This is a movie that you may want to stop and rewind and watch again. The performances are as good as they get, Ray Liotta plays the sleazeball to perfection, and its hard to believe, but you will feel sorry for him.
