Director:

Frank Miller

Writers:

Frank Miller
Will Eisner

Starring:

Gabriel Macht
Eva Mendes
Samuel L. Jackson
Scarlett Johansson
Paz Vega
Stana Katic

Quotes:

Shut up and bleed!
Spirit, you and me are two of a kind.
I don't like eggs on my face.
I'm the Octopus, I've got eight of everything!
And this is for Muffin!
This is just damn weird.

The Spirit based off Will Eisner's comic has been brought to screen. I have not read the Spirit series of comic books at all. Although this movie is like a comic book. With the same kind of atmosphere of Sin City or even 300. More of a Sin City kind of feel to it . That old 1930's-1940's look with comic book scenery drawn in the background for most of the film in dark colors. The movie is basically about the Spirit played by "Gabriel Macht" fighting off his arch nemesis the Octopus "Samuel L. Jackson" in the Central City comic book world. The movie does lead into some romantic involvements with on his first loves San Saref "Eva Mendes". Plus quite a few other beautiful women during the film such as Scarlett Johansson and Paz Vega. The Spirit is your typical ladies man and fearless of nothing to protect Central City. Him and the Octopus have some long drawn out smash'em up fights in total comic book style . All done with cheesy jokes one after another through the entire film coming from everywhere.

The whole film seemed to be pretty sparse in the plot department. Yes they had the comic book feel, with scenery, characters, and camera shots. Also the corny jokes and no swearing what so ever that I can remember, which is a rarity these days. The story development is almost not there, its just a little smattering of this and that through out the film .Actually the main plot I would say is the Spirit interacting with his long lost love and lamenting over losing her in the past during his childhood. The fights between the Spirit and the Octopus are almost like filler, but a great depiction of a comic book fight on screen. Maybe Frank Miller just wanted to show that it could be done? I wanted to like this film more than I did, and ended up leaving wishing I read a couple of the Spirit series first before going to see it . Most people will find this film boring and utter waste of time, especially if they have never read a comic book before. Unfortunately the comic book readers of the world are the only hope of anyone truly liking this film at all. This film would be better to go see on the big screen than at home later on DVD, just for its cinematic appeal. However if you manage to see it in the theater. You will leave feeling that you got ripped off .
