Quote:

NO MAS!

I recently joined the ranks of the unemployed.  I wasn’t broke in a monetary sense, but certainly felt broke in regards of having nothing to do for hours on end.  I also found that this feeling of disappointment was leading me to writing negative reviews – even if I liked the film. (Mea Culpa, Appaloosa)

I needed to laugh at something stupid.  Disney delivered.

It’s basically screwball comedy with dogs.  Drew Barrymore is the voice of Chloe, a cream colored Chihuahua living the life of a spoiled pocket pup.  She has play dates at her mansion, gets salon appointments, wears designer clothes and gets toted around by her owner (Jamie Lee Curtis) in a Louis Vuitton bag.  Papi, voiced by George Lopez, is a working class Chihuahua who travels with the house landscaper.  Chloe is taken to Mexico by her valley girl babysitter for the week.  Of course, she gets lost and then valley girl has to enlist cute landscaper guy and Papi in the search.

The Disney folks sure knew their target audience for the premiere.  I was the minority in a sea of Latino families with small children, which was a nice change of pace from seeing the same 50 people I usually meet at these things.  It certainly added to the enjoyment.  The movie is full of characters voiced by the varied likes of Andy Garcia, Cheech Marin and others who quickly interchange English and Spanish throughout the movie.  It also touches on negative cultural cliches like back alley dog fighting, and finding a coyote to get you over the border.  It then takes a very surreal turn when she meets a pack of wild Chihuahuas.

Sometimes you just have to laugh at the absurd.  I did.  Take a mental health day and catch this in a matinee with your kids.
