I’ve been in a think piece rut lately, so I thought I’d catch a mindless comedy.

Found it.

Cameron Diaz is back as your favorite beautiful but confused loser -girl who’s out to find herself .  Trouble is, she has to do it while being married to a guy she barely knows, played by Ashton Kutcher.

Joy (Diaz) runs with her friend to Vegas to regroup after being humiliated by her now ex-fiancé.   Jack (Ashton) , who is also running away, gets assigned to her room by accident, and then the obvious all night drunken party, and cliché Vegas Wedding , they had fun, now they hate each other,  yadda yadda yadda

As they part, Joy gives Jack a “kiss-off” quarter for a slot machine.  He pulls, they win $3,000,000.00.   Now the dilemma isn’t only the annulment, but one of money.  Back in New York, the judge (Dennis Miller) loathes their story so much, that he holds the money hostage and forces them to 6 months of marriage to work out their issues.

There are the obvious bathroom and men vs. women jokes, but I like the scenes where Joy spends time with Jack’s family, and where he reciprocates by coming to her aid at her company retreat.  (can’t help it, I’m a girl)  The themes of Twenty or Thirty-somethings trying to find their way isn’t anything new, but it did make me smile here and there.  Couple things  - 1. The music choices got in the way (who dances to “What a Feeling” as their first dance?)  2. The best friends are vile, nasty beasts and I’m glad they are imaginary people.

Otherwise, it’s light, cute and again, mindless . . and I’m glad my seat was free.
