Sydney Pollack

Sydney Pollack was an actor turned professor turned director turned producer turned actor again. I, have watched his films over and over again, and loved his hosting of The Essentials series on AMC, and now realize that I, along with millions of others have been attending classes on story, screenwriting, and editing.

When he couldn’t make it initially as an actor, he was invited to teach. Apparently he never stopped.

He was rooted in technique, but not afraid of improvisation. He could talk to an actor and help them find the center of their character in a scene. He demonstrated through his versatility that you can not only survive but thrive if you continue to work at what you love. There are not too many people whose projects jump in scope from the screwball turns in Tootsie, to the epic landscapes in Out of Africa, to taking bit parts in his own films and making them his own.

I searched my house for a movie of his to watch, and all I could find was my used copy of The Interpreter that I had bought in a “5 films for $20” deal at the video store. Apparently, his films are so ubiquitous, that I never had the need to have a personal copy of anything else. In the end, it turned out to be a great choice. The extra features on the DVD were all about Sydney. He gives the commentary, he talks about his career, how frustrating and wonderful it can be to make movies – he even gives a demonstration why you should watch a film in its original format (Pan & Scan vs Widescreen). What a find!

Again, always a teacher – Sydney you will be missed.
